Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland is in Africa this week, visiting Staying Alive Foundation projects in Tanzania and Kenya. Today it has just been announced that Kelly has taken an HIV test... Check out the official line below...

In her role as MTV Staying Alive Special Ambassador, R&B singer-songwriter Kelly Rowland has agreed to be tested for HIV and AIDS in Nairobi, setting an impressive example for youth on a global-scale to do the same. By stepping up not only in word, but in action, Kelly is going beyond conventional celebrity cause-promotion and is leading by example on an issue that is both relevant and pressing to all of us as a global community in the 21st century. Her action is a prime example of the standard of integrity the Staying Alive Foundation’s most recent campaign - ‘Stand by What You Say’ - aims to promote in encouraging people to talk openly about sex, sexual health and HIV/AIDS thereby helping to raise awareness of the deadly epidemic.

Kelly’s decision to be tested stems from her strong belief that knowledge and information is power. The act is also a symbolic gesture of respect to the heroic recipients of the 2008 Staying Alive Foundation Awards, whose dedication to encouraging, educating and empowering their peers in the fight against HIV and AIDS was recognised by Ms Rowland and the Foundation through a cash grant enabling them to continue their inspirational projects.

Kelly isn't just sassy - she's for real! What she revealed when I spent private time with her touched my heart because this lady is truly focused on carrying out her MTV Staying Alive ambassadorial duties with all her heart. Read the inside info in Twende, August issue...

I think it is absolutely great that artists can use their celebrity status to bring awareness to such important issues. I am a HUGE Kelly Rowland fan and I am also an advocate for HIV/AIDS Awareness! I have been working with a few local campaigners to sponsor a trip to Africa for my organization. Kelly works as a wonderful Ambassador because she genuinely cares and doesn't go just to get publicity. It's all about getting the word out about AIDS. Good job Kelly. Maybe with people seeing a star doing something positive will inspire them to help us in increasing awareness in the US! Thanks Kelly!!!
