Let’s Talk About Sex, God and Rock & Roll

Posted by Guest Blogger on March 1st, 2011

As part of our Let’s Talk About Sex campaign, check out this post by Brazilian blogger, musician and devout Christian Matheus Ortega on the challenges he often faces when it comes to living the rock & roll lifestyle without the sex that usually goes with it.

Have you ever wondered how is the life of a young musician traveling to play around the world, living the best of each moment?

I come from the beautiful land of Brazil, a place where people always have a smile to offer, a loud passion for soccer, and a natural ability to dance. I am a 23-year-old musician that has the freedom to travel around every weekend to play, to know new places and different people. And I am living amazing days.

I have recently developed a social project in Haiti that aims to capacitate young musicians through music education. The experience was fabulous. This music video was recorded after the earthquake in Port-au-Prince:

I feel like I am living a dream.

But my life is far from being as the liberal lifestyle of most artists in Brazil – smoking marijuana, having sex everyday, living carelessly. I come from a Christian background, which has been my steering wheel since my childhood.

These are some of my values: Sex is meant for marriage. Divorce is allowable, but should be avoided. Betrayal is unthinkable. Purity is precious. Love is God – above all things.

I have already had some interesting experiences that make me wonder about my values. One day I had an interesting conversation with a charming girl:

“Come to my room tonight.” She said. I looked at her and thought of her boyfriend.

“I can’t let you betray the one you love and I can’t betray myself.”

She thought for a while and said: “But what if I told you that he meant nothing to me?”

“It would not change anything at all” I replied, convinced of what I wanted.

“Why? What are your values?

“I want to marry a virgin.”

Last year my band opened a remarkable concert for Switchfoot. I have lived an impressive phenomenon – the stage brings applauses, fans, and girls. I could have a lot of sex, thirst for fame, live carpe diem like most in my generation. Yet, I choose something different.

It is bizarre to live both as an artist and a believer in God. It is a challenge to live without sex until I marry. It might be crazy to expose my personal life in this blog. But I just wanted to share my dream with everyone at MTV Staying Alive.

Life is all about living your dreams, despite who you are or what people say you are. Even if your dream is Rock & Roll with God, without sex.

I liked your post, so much, I believe in the same things you do and the video is amazing, hope and love are everything we have
I think that its amazing how you believe in something most of the people dont, and how you stand up to it. We should raise up our voices for what we believe in, for our dreams and our convictions.
even when no one believes, God does.

  3. I totally relate to Matheus, since he’s a great example for me. I already got married, unlike him, but I have the same values he does. Live as a Christian is not easy, especially when you are an artist, but if you stick to your values, it’s totally worth it.

Thank God for your life and the clear way you said what you believe.
I believe the same you believe and even those who don’t believe it should respect you – not for the belief itself, but more for what this world needs also: people that are firm in their positions, and you are one of them.

  17. Saara Campos says:

This world is all about me, myself and i. It takes courage to stand for what you believe in. Real love is not selfish. Real love wants the best for the other. That example you shared about that girl reveals this clearly. People may say: well, we´re only people with natural desires. But we have a story to tell about this wonderful Jesus who can transform our selfish hearts and make us new…that´s love and it´s real. His word will stand when everything else fades. Love you lil´bro. I´m so proud of you.

  24. Mário Freitas says:

Matheus is a blessing for Brazil and for Haiti. I am honored to be your friend and ministry partner. Keep moving, buddy!

  25. Glória a Deus!

  26. Marcus Thieme says:

    Mat,

Keep moving without fear of facing the unknown regardless the direction the wind takes you never losing sight of humbleness, creativity and the real freedom that comes through the only WAY!
    Your rock bro.

  29. Heitor says:

I totally relate to Matheus! I’m really glad to see MTV gave him space to express himself, although he (as myself) is so different from most young people.
Christian lifestyle should be defended more strongly by us, and not cause us shame. Thank you Matheus Ortega and MTV for making me and so many Christian youngsters feel respected. :D
