As part of our Let’s Talk About Sex campaign, check out this post by Brazilian blogger, musician and devout Christian Matheus Ortega on the challenges he often faces when it comes to living the rock & roll lifestyle without the sex that usually goes with it.
Have you ever wondered how is the life of a young musician traveling to play around the world, living the best of each moment?
I come from the beautiful land of Brazil, a place where people always have a smile to offer, a loud passion for soccer, and a natural ability to dance. I am a 23-year-old musician that has the freedom to travel around every weekend to play, to know new places and different people. And I am living amazing days.
I have recently developed a social project in Haiti that aims to capacitate young musicians through music education. The experience was fabulous. This music video was recorded after the earthquake in Port-au-Prince:
I feel like I am living a dream.
But my life is far from being as the liberal lifestyle of most artists in Brazil – smoking marijuana, having sex everyday, living carelessly. I come from a Christian background, which has been my steering wheel since my childhood.
These are some of my values: Sex is meant for marriage. Divorce is allowable, but should be avoided. Betrayal is unthinkable. Purity is precious. Love is God – above all things.
I have already had some interesting experiences that make me wonder about my values. One day I had an interesting conversation with a charming girl:
“Come to my room tonight.” She said. I looked at her and thought of her boyfriend.
“I can’t let you betray the one you love and I can’t betray myself.”
She thought for a while and said: “But what if I told you that he meant nothing to me?”
“It would not change anything at all” I replied, convinced of what I wanted.
“Why? What are your values?
“I want to marry a virgin.”
Last year my band opened a remarkable concert for Switchfoot. I have lived an impressive phenomenon – the stage brings applauses, fans, and girls. I could have a lot of sex, thirst for fame, live carpe diem like most in my generation. Yet, I choose something different.
It is bizarre to live both as an artist and a believer in God. It is a challenge to live without sex until I marry. It might be crazy to expose my personal life in this blog. But I just wanted to share my dream with everyone at MTV Staying Alive.
Life is all about living your dreams, despite who you are or what people say you are. Even if your dream is Rock & Roll with God, without sex.
