Introducing Me, Myself & HIV

Posted by Staying Alive Editor on November 25th, 2010

MTV Staying Alive are launching a brand new one-off reality TV show called Me, Myself & HIV on World AIDS Day, December 1st.

The show follows the lives of Slim; an aspiring DJ and music producer from Lusaka, Zambia, and Angelikah; a college student from Minneapolis, USA.

Both Slim and Angelikah are HIV positive, and this show aims to give you all an insight into the reality of what it is like to be living with HIV.

We are really excited about Me, Myself & HIV and feel it has the potential to get people thinking about the real issues that are related to HIV on a day-to-day basis, such as the daily medication and the challenge of disclosing your status.

We also feel that this show will clear up some of the stigma that surrounds people living with HIV. The show follows Slim and Angelikah as they speak about their ambitions and plans for the future – we see Slim DJ-ing in a local club and Angelikah out socializing with her friends.

Slim and Angelikah have been great to work with and aside from the show have helped us create  some awesome extra content which will be released when the show is aired – be sure to check it out on www.staying-alive.org/hiv from November 29th.

We will be posting the schedule tomorrow so you can find out exactly when it is airing on your local station, but in the meantime check out the promo below and let us know what you think.

As a gay HIV positive male I am so happy to see that MTV is taking a stand and producing a show that will hopefully bring a brighter light to the disease that so many, both positive and negative share. If you ever find yourself wanting to interview someone please do let me know. I am not afraid to speak out about having HIV or the discrimination and prejudices I have faced both from the straight community as well as my own gay community. Thank you again MTV for recognizing the need for a reality show that gives back more than mere entertainment.

I truly wish that there was something like this back in 1991 that’s when I found out that I was positive, actually I was diagnosed with full blown AIDS, all my friends gradually left out of my life in a matter of 3 months and most of my family disowned me and to this day they still have not spoken to me, my children are now adults, with kids of there own ( I have 2 a girl and a boy ) my son is also positive with 1 girl and 1 on the way, so I thought I was going to die within a year, but here I am 19 years later and still going strong,my plan is to be here til my grandkids graduate from school and I’m no longer ashamed to speak to people about HIV nor deny it any longer all my kids friends have questions about HIV and so I talk to them about it frequently… So Thank you MTV for making a show that hopefully make people aware of what we have to o through on a daily basis… Let tell you that daily life is a struggle..

The promo for the ‘Me, Myself and HIV’ programme looks brilliant and I think this is the programme where the Staying Alive Foundation have really brought the subject of living with HIV to the surface, showing the gritty reality of living with a potentially fatal illness. As reported in the UK, there has been a rise in the number of new HIV infections in the last 12 months and the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the UK right now is an estimated 86,500, and undoubtedly, as ignorance seems to be growing towards the seriousness of STIs again worldwide, I think there is no doubt we will see a rise in the number of people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide again. We wish that the worldwide governments would follow the Staying Alive Foundation’s example of showing that even though we are 29 years, almost 30 years on, since the first group of people, mainly gays and injecting drug users at the time, were found dying of AIDS, the disease now affects millions around the world and although strides are continously being made towards maybe reaching the opportunity to provide a cure/vaccine for HIV/AIDS, it is still a disease which threatens everyone – male, female, gay, straight, woman, man, child. Well done again Staying Alive and MTV on continuing your dedicated work towards continuously educating us about HIV/AIDS and supporting projects around the world who work tirelessly to emphasise awareness, prevention, etc, of HIV/AIDS too. I’ll certainly be watching this programme on Wednesday night.

I think this show looks awesome and I think its important to educate younger audiences about this issue not just because it is World AIDS Day. I can’t wait to see the full episode!

I am really grateful that this is coming to light. I have lost alot of close family as a result. A neighbour who had just test positive committed suicide when he was diagnosed; what hurt me was that he cut himself and bleed to death, there was no one beyond the initial counsel to talk to him. Although education can teach one alot, it falls short. The stigma remains always. Fear presides! At least this way the challenges become real and the reality of it is that regardless of how, people are people and some need more support. You don’t die, you live and those dreams don’t end, they can become reality! It starts within, and it is important for everyone to support them regardless. Thank you for making this real!

OMG! When did this air? I am a long-time HIV survivor for three decades. I would’ve loved to see this. Is it available to watch online? We need much more of this type of programming to help eradicate the stigma surrounding the virus. BRAVO MTV!!!!
